Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Global terror listing and legal charges
Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.
Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.
Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.
Trial details and cross-border allegations
The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.
Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.
Historical background and organizational structure
The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.
Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.
Previous convictions and global responses
A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.
America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.
“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
